Imported from Canada, where it was the highest-rated program in 1989, this miniseries recounts a celebrated real-life murder case. Kenneth Welsh plays Colin Thatcher, a wealthy Saskatchewan rancher and politician. Kate Nelligan plays his wife. Following a rancorous divorce and custody battle—and a pair of botched attempts on her life-she is killed and he is tried for the crime.

The prosaic narrative approach leaches much of the dramatic tension from this story. But towering over the rest of the film is Welsh's bully-run-amok. Full of imperiousness and rage, his performance is so scalding that it elevates this mini slightly above NBC's similar project this year, Blind Faith.

The conclusion airs the following night at the same time.
