In a poignant film reminiscent of the work of playwright Jason Miller, Brian Dennehy plays a man swamped by disappointment. The Pennsylvania factory he had worked at all his adult life has just closed, and the younger son (Matt Damon) on whom he had pinned great hopes announces he has dropped out of his premed program.

The drama is overdone at times, particularly when it tries to make points about the decline of American industry. But affecting performances by Dennehy, Damon and Piper Laurie, as the lady of the house, keep this film from getting far off the track.
