It's saying a lot to note that in her long career, Jessica Tandy has never acted with more grace and dignity than she does here as a Southern matron trying to adjust to her advancing years and to the fact that her chauffeur is black. Equally impressive as the chauffeur, Morgan Freeman offers the acting equivalent of rich harmonies to Tandy's performance. Alfred Uhry's adaptation of his own play, which is about aging at least as much as it is about race, was directed by Bruce Beresford. (Warner)
