As we wend our way into August, it's time for our first annual Picks & Pans Plus Midsummer Awards. The envelopes, please: MVP (Most Visible Performer): Madonna, on view in her Blond Ambition Tour, as Breathless Mahoney in Dick Tracy and, in her spare moments, as Warren Beatty's squeeze. Top rookies: singer Mariah Carey, 20, whose single Vision of Love rose like a Fourth of July rocket to reach No. 2 on the Billboard charts; and Seinfeld, NBC's engaging new summer sitcom that earned a regular-season renewal. Most Bankable Act (Love 'Em or Loathe 'Em): New Kids on the Block...even if they amass as many brickbats as dollars. Most Bankable Concept: the movie sequel. After the success of Die Hard 2, RohoCop 2 and Another 48 Hrs., we can't wait for Arachnophobia 2: The Spiders Strike Back. Biggest Summer Bummer: any project featuring foulmouthed comic Andrew Dice Clay. He was panned on Saturday Night Live, his movie The Adventures of Ford Fairlane has spluttered at the box office, and the planned late-summer release of his in-concert film has been postponed. This Dice guy finishes last.
