They say it's a good thing to feed both the mind and the soul. For the mind, I recommend Harry Smith's Emmy-worthy "The Record of Who We Are," on CBS This Morning every Friday. Whether he is holding forth on baseball or urban strife, Smith's reports, most of them darkly humorous (some of them just plain dark), never fail to hit home. For the soul, few cooking shows can match Jeff Smith's Frugal Gourmet on PBS for sheer entertainment and for demystifying the kitchen. Of course, my soul knows when I have overdone it too. It's 30 lbs. lighter these days, thanks to a weight-reducing program combined with stretching and panting to ESPN's Bodies in Motion, a killer workout hosted by Gilad Janklowicz. David Hilt-brand returns next week, while I, along with the rest of you, dig in for the new TV season, which seems to offer a lot of good new shows. (But then, what do I know? Last year, I thought Sister Kate was going to be real hot stuff.)
