It doesn't take a feminist to know which way the gender trend is going in Hollywood. The current film crop is full of male buddy movies, but most women with any visibility are in secondary, mate roles—Laura Dern in Wild at Heart, Bonnie Bedelia in Presumed Innocent, Demi Moore in Ghost. This is no revolutionary trend, but it's still discouraging (and foolishly restrictive) that there are so few films driven by women characters that you really notice something like The Music Box or the forthcoming Postcards from the Edge.
