Few of us realize that even to hold a concept of relative truth makes us entirely different from people who lived only a few decades ago, and we complacently overlook the evidence that many people living today profoundly hate the view of reality that seems so eminently tolerant and sensible to the western liberal mind. We do not comprehend what a stunning—and yet still incomplete—upheaval of thought has occurred in the recent historical past. Nor have we pursued our liberal tolerance to its logical conclusions and accepted the enormous uncertainties and vast possibilities of the life it opens up before us.
