CBS (Wednesdays, 8 P.M. ET)

B+

In one of the season's happiest surprises, newcomer Lenny Clarke stars as a sharp-tongued working-class hero in Boston. A mix of Archie Bunker and Jay Leno, he works two jobs, as a hard hat and a hotel doorman, to support his three daughters and help his aging parents.

Lee Garlington is outstanding as Lenny's wife, a weary mom. Peter Dobson is très amusing as his no-good hustler of a brother, and Eugene Roche presses all the right buttons as their stubborn pop. But it's Clarke who carries this alloy of sentiment and sarcasm on his broad shoulders.
