>Beginning Sunday (Sept. 23, 8 P.M. ET), PBS devotes more than 11 hours during five consecutive nights to The Civil War, an extraordinary, encyclopedic study of the bloody battle between the states (1861-5). Documentarian Ken Burns (see p. 95) has woven together an engrossingly detailed narrative, interviews with historians, an amazing collection of archival photographs and the voices of such people as Jason Robards and Garrison Keillor reading from period letters, speeches and newspaper accounts. (Sam Waterston handles the Lincoln material admirably.) Rarely has history been made to seem so immediate.
