Due to the indigence of his mother (Lee Garlington), a boy (Fred Savage) with muscular dystrophy is placed in a state nursing home where he tries to buck the institution's increasingly oppressive measures. Ellen Burstyn steps into the white shoes of Louise (One Flew Over (he Cuckoo's Nest) Fletcher as the evil head nurse. Kevin Spacey is the boy's ally on the staff.
While Savage, now 14, handles the physical demands of the part with aplomb, the emotional component is outside his range. The dramatic impact of the movie is hampered by the fact that all the villains seem like paper tigers.
