For the record, I hereby upgrade Murphy Brown (on CBS, Mondays, 9 P.M. ET) from a B+ to a solid A. Every week, Candice Bergen's new sitcom takes imaginative gambles and every week it wins. Mary Tyler Moore: Eat your heart out. Also for the record, I hereby arbitrarily and unilaterally declare Wednesday to be the Best Night on TV. Thursday used to be the best, back when it had five great shows instead of just two—Cheers and L.A. Law. Now, with a little channel-flipping, Wednesday easily beats that. Head of the Class (on ABC at 8:30 P.M. ET) is still good. The Wonder Years (on ABC at 9) is not just wonderful. No, let's go all the way: It is the best show on TV today. Baby Boom (on NBC at 9:30) keeps getting better every week. And China Beach (on ABC at 10) is flat-out great. Speaking of great shows, next week's annual year-end double issue brings you the best (and worst) of 1988 in this space, so this week we cover three weeks' shows all at once.
