Even by the ever-rising standards of Rocky Mountain high society, the Don Johnson-Melanie Griffith engagement party the night after Christmas represented some sort of peak. How often does one see a merger of this magnitude—Mondo Miami's macho-est man mated to Hollywood's hottest, most happening Working Girl? Once, well maybe twice, in their lifetimes.
Their marriage back in 1976 lasted less than a year, but Melanie was only 18 then. Now she's 31 and he's 39 and they know what they want—and it's each other! Just recently out of his romance with Barbra Streisand, Don reportedly proposed to Melanie on Dec. 17, the same night he kissed heron Saturday Night Live. Life has so few happy endings, even for the rich and beautiful, it's no wonder le tout Aspen turned out for a party in their honor at the Hotel Jerome ballroom to boogie through the buffet line to Jimmy Buffer's tunes. Among the 150 friends celebrating with the affianced were a passel of positive role models of relatively long-lived love: Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal, Sally Field and Alan Greisman, Michael and Diandra Douglas, Donald and Ivana Trump, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, Cher and Rob Camilletti, and Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden. Even George and Alana Hamilton, though a couple no longer, danced as if they were.
Johnson and Griffith had already settled into domesticity. Melanie and Alexander, her 3-year-old son from her marriage to actor Steven (Scarface) Bauer, have moved in with Johnson in Florida, where he's finishing the last season of Miami Vice. Don's son, Jesse, 6, lives in Los Angeles with his mother, actress Patti D'Arbanville. After years of leading separate lives, it may just be that Don and Melanie are ready to find happiness the second time around.
