Unless you're catching up with holiday hits (see box), the first month of a new year is usually a cinematic junkyard—a place to dump the movie misbegotten. Remember The Couch Trip, For Keeps and Rent-a-Cop? Of course you don't. Released last January, those three losers slid quietly into obscurity by Groundhog Day. This week three new movies try to beat the January jinx. Ha!
