Picks and Pans Review: Actors Turned Directors

UPDATED 01/30/1989 at 01:00 AM EST Originally published 01/30/1989 at 01:00 AM EST

It's certainly not a new concept. Robert Red-ford, with Ordinary People, and Warren Beatty, with Reds, won Oscars for their efforts. But for most thespians, directing has proved a risky business. John Wayne faltered helming The Alamo, Marlon Brando skidded with One-Eyed Jacks, and John Derek, even with wife Bo for decoration, took a fall on Tarzan and on Bolero. Some actors have learned to their peril that there's more to directing than wearing down jackets and funny caps and carrying a megaphone. Despite the odds, two new contenders enter the fray this week.
