Picks and Pans Review: In Search of a New Gable

Seven years after rugged, romantic Clark Gable suffered a fatal heart attack in 1960, Joan Crawford commented, "He was King of an empire called Hollywood. The empire is not what it was—but the King has not been dethroned, even after death." Crawford's point remains valid. This year, the 50th anniversary of Gable's biggest hit, Gone with the Wind, there's still no one to take his place at Tara. Pretenders to the throne keep popping up, including Tom Selleck, Charles Bronson and Nick Nolte. All three scored high in recent media polls that asked for nominees to play Rhett Butler in the planned sequel to GWTW. Watching Selleck, Bronson and Nolte trying to jump start their stalled film vehicles this week may sway your vote.
