The former metaphor-burdened featured player in 11 Bergman movies—and Ming the Merciless in 1980's Flash Gordon—Max von Sydow is powerful as a Swedish farm worker overwhelmed by events (and a dreary movie).

TAP Sammy Davis Jr. is cast as a modern urban version of Gabby Hayes grumbling at the young whipper-snappers. But he keeps his dignity, and when he dances, you remember what all the fuss has been about.
