>JACKNIFE A close-up drama about two buddies' postwar readjustment problems, this isn't the most profound of Vietnam movies, but it offers adroit, often affecting performances by Robert De Niro, Ed Harris and Kathy Baker.

THE MIGHTY QUINN Denzel Washington admirers in particular and fans of idiosyncratic films in general can relax and enjoy this at times overwrought Caribbean mystery.

OUT COLD Basically a throwaway, this murder comedy benefits from the ability of Teri Garr, John Lithgow and Randy Quaid to see the lighter side of black humor; Lithgow is the movies' most likable butcher since Marty.
