>THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS INSIDE THE HUMAN BODY

The third Magic School Bus book blends the irreverence of Mad and 3-2-1-Contacts ability to make science fun. In a variation on the film Fantastic Voyage, Ms. Frizzle's class and its bus shrink, then take an insider's anatomical tour—and learn brightly articulated facts about the body: "Your blood is like a delivery service. It carries food and oxygen to your body's cells and waste products away from the cells." Author Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen liven things with gags about the "Friz" (as the kids call her) and sardonic asides. After the class returns to school, one pupil says, "What a trip!" Another adds, "I'd like to go to the lungs again." A third chimes in, "I'd rather go to Hawaii." (Scholastic, $13.95)
