Another hot-selling mixed-gender Swedish pop group singing in English? Abba revisited? Well, yeah, in a post-synthesizer milieu. And since the duo Roxette is more than capable of whipping up brisk, nicely turned tunes such as "The Look," which has both bounce and kick, they compare favorably with their Scandinavian predecessors.
Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson were both extremely popular as solo acts in Sweden before teaming up. For us, the equivalent would be Madonna and Jon Bon Jovi forming their own group. Fredriksson has a bright voice, which at its best resembles Ann Wilson's. Gessle writes crafty, sweet little songs. Their sound is a bit thin and jejune by American pop standards, but if Roxette isn't exactly seductive, they are pretty good musical flirts. (EMI)
