A book about animals' eyes, this is not always the mix of poetry and science it might have been. The slight verses by Australian children's book author Judith Worthy stress the cute over the informative: "This dog has eyes that seem to say, 'Come on! Hurry up! I want to play!' " The drawings, by Malaysian-born Béba Hall, however, are close-ups likely to hold little readers' attention. And aspiring zoologists do learn such things as the fact that camels have long eyelashes to help fend off flies. (Doubleday, $9.95)
