The beginning of this video commemorating the worldwide concert tour that Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli and Sammy Davis Jr. launched last fall resembles a gush-in, with the trio rhapsodizing at length about how wonderful they all are. The actual concert, filmed at Detroit's Fox Theatre, offers less shlock, more entertainment. Davis is first. He gets through "The Candy Man" for the zillionth time, but also offers such new material as "Music of the Night" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera.
Minelli, who is more entertainer than singer, grins and prances through "Cabaret" as well as "Bright Sunny Day." And Sinatra, who is still capable of producing scintillating musical moments despite his diminished vocal range, insists on the excruciating "My Way." But he also wrings every last nuance of determination and triumph from the Stevie Wonder hit "For Once in My Life."
Only the most devout fans will feel compelled to add this tape to their collections. The uninitiated will surely be able to track down all three performers in more genuinely Ultimate Events than this one. (Kodak, $29.95; 800-331-6839)
