Afeni Shakur, mother I of slain rapper Tupac Shakur, filed suit April 18 in L.A. federal court against Death Row Records, seeking $17 million in royalties that the hip-hop label owes her son's estate for his 1996 double album All Eyez on Me, as well as repayment of expenses she claims were wrongfully charged to Shakur by Death Row. The recording, released shortly before Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas last September, has sold more than 3 million copies in the United States....

Maxim Financial Corp., a Boulder, Colo., investment company, is suing actress Debbie Reynolds, 65, and her ex-husband, developer Richard Hamlett, for fraud, deceit and misrepresentation, claiming Reynolds and Hamlett have yet to repay an $800,000 loan made in 1993 for their Las Vegas hotel and museum. According to the lawsuit, filed April 21 in Denver federal court, only a single $50,000 payment has been made. Reynolds had no comment.

James Earl Ray, 69, currently serving 99 years in prison for the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was admitted to Columbia Nashville Memorial Hospital on April 19 with complications from terminal liver disease. Ray, who has been in and out of the hospital since December, was released a few days later.

Author Tom Clancy, 50, and his wife, Wanda Thomas, 49, have separated after nearly 28 years of marriage. The couple, who began divorce proceedings in 1995 but later reconciled, have four children, ages 11 to 23....

Michael Kennedy, 39, fourth son of the late Robert F. Kennedy and head of the nonprofit Citizens Energy Corp. of Boston, and his wife, Victoria Gifford Kennedy, 40, daughter of sportscaster Frank Gifford, announced on April 17 that they are separating after 16 years of marriage. The couple have three children, ages 10 to 13....

Michael's cousin John F. Kennedy Jr., 36, has reportedly had a split of a different kind. He and business partner Michael J. Berman, who cofounded and launched the political magazine George in the fall of 1995, have parted ways. Berman has left his position as president of the magazine; Kennedy remains as editor-in-chief.
