by Andre Walker
First we learned how to eat like Oprah when we read In the Kitchen with Rosie. Then we learned how to run like Oprah in Make the Connection: Ten Steps to a Better Body. Now, like Oprah, you can be in the chair with Andre—Walker, that is, the Chicago stylist who 11 years ago had the luck and pluck to get his hands on Winfrey's hair. He hasn't let go since. Thanks to a regimen that includes botanical shampoos, a 1,200-watt dryer set on high (so her strands won't frizz) and some expert turns of the curling iron, Winfrey says her bad hair days are behind her. Walker has reaped five Emmys for his hairstyling labors.
This is a handsome book, full of pretty women and commonsense advice on how to identify your hair type and tame it but good. "This isn't war," Walker writes. "Your hair isn't your enemy. You should love what you've got, whether it's bleached or jet-black, straightened or kinky, wavy or stick-straight, bouncin' and behavin' or limp and lank. All you need is a formula to make you look like a million bucks. And that's what I'm here for."
Still, one can't help but wonder what's next in the Oprah oeuvre: Floss Like Oprah? Leg Wax the Winfrey Way? An anxious nation awaits. (Simon & Schuster, $23.50)
