Word has it that Magic Johnson is interested in hot Latin percussionist Sheila E. being the bandleader on his proposed late-night syndicated talk show in development at 20th Century Fox. I hear Johnson has been a fan of Sheila E.'s since he met her a couple of years ago backstage at one of her concerts. If it happens, the new gig would make Sheila E., formerly a bandmate of the Artist Formerly Known as You Know Who, the first female bandleader on a national talk show. Fox is planning to launch Johnson this fall....

Talk isn't cheap, either. Roseanne's deal for her 1998 daytime talk show with King World is for up-front cash, partial ownership and a significant amount of stock in King World, the distributor of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Roseanne says she does not view Winfrey as a competitor and will root for her continued success, "because now I own the company." Roseanne's manager, Jeff Wald, adds that Paramount, Universal and Fox all made runs at Roseanne during her negotiations with King World....

One of the many advantages of having producer Aaron Spelling for a father is that his TV shows can provide daughter Tori with an ever-expanding pool of actors from which to choose her dates. I hear that Tori, previously linked with Malibu Shore's Greg Vaughan, is dating Trevor Edmond, who plays the charming but manipulative teenager Michael on the latest of Daddy's shows, Pacific Palisades. The couple bonded last year when Trevor played Tori's stalker on 90210....

And speaking of Aaron Spelling, two of his shows, Melrose Place and 90210, have to alter their production schedules for next season to accommodate pregnant actresses. Melrose will start up again in June, rather than its normal time in July, so episodes can be banked before the four-months pregnant Heather Locklear is showing too much. Meanwhile, 90210's Jennie Garth is due in early July, so the start of production for next season has been pushed back to the end of July....

Since Romy and Michele's High School Reunion opens with costars Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow making fun of Pretty Woman, I wondered if this upset Garry Marshall, who directed Pretty Woman. "Why should I be upset? I make fun of a lot of things too. That's my field," says Marshall. "I'm flattered to be satirized. The worst would be if nobody laughed."...

Elizabeth Berkley wore little or nothing in Showgirls, the most celebrated flop of 1995. But the lifelong vegetarian agreed to wrap herself in lettuce—or, more specifically, a $600 formfitting gown made entirely of collard greens—on behalf of "Lettuce Be Lean," a vegetarian campaign sponsored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. A source at the photo shoot says during the few hours Berkley wore the dress, "she had to be misted every 20 minutes, like a produce section."
