IF THE SUBJECT OF OLD-STYLE TREACHERY in the New Army sounds a tad tedious for dog day afternoons—surprise! Bursting with sex, murder and assorted mayhem, this military thriller by best-selling author Truscott (Dress Gray) packs more firepower than the Fourth of July.
The plot revolves around spirited Maj. Kara Guidry, an attorney stationed at Georgia's Fort Benning. Although her career has been stalled by sexism, Guidry still buys the Army's "Be all you can be" motto—until she is assigned to investigate the slaying of a young female lieutenant. With her ruthless base commander a prime suspect, Guidry quickly realizes that doing her duty could put her—as well as the sergeant with whom she has been having a clandestine affair—in the line of fire.
Truscott's aim is occasion-s ally off the mark, as with a few characters who amount to little more than plot devices. But on the whole, this third-generation West Pointer has created a thought-provoking page-turner worth saluting. (Dutton, $23.95)
