On New York's Shelter Island, piano-cum-seafaring man Billy Joel took the wheel of the Nomad, one of the powerboats the singer has helped design for his Long Island Boating Company. Joel's next album, Greatest Hits Vol. 3, including three new tunes, docks in stores Aug. 19.

It was game, set and love match for Wimbledon winner Pete Sampras and his girlfriend, Father of the Bride's, Kimberly Williams, at the Champion's Dinner in London. Sampras, who beat France's Cedric Pioline to net his fourth Wimbledon title, has been courting Williams since April.

Oh, hello...Newman. Seinfeld's Wayne Knight cooled off his costar, Home Improvement's Tim Allen, on the Manhattan set of their comedy For Richer or Poorer, due in December.

Among the stars at the L.A. premiere of the Jodie Foster-Matthew McConaughey sci-fi flick Contact were girlfriends Ellen DeGeneres (above, left) and Anne Heche, who put their heads together before Heche left for Hawaii to begin filming the romantic comedy 6 Days, 7 Nights with Harrison Ford. Meanwhile, Contact costar Jake Busey (above, right), 26, son of Gary Busey, showed he was born to the purple as he kept watch for aliens, and Harry Connick Jr (right), back onscreen next month in the romantic comedy Excess Baggage, was the man in black.

A long way from Laugh-In, Goldie Hawn checked the view from the other side of the camera while making her directorial debut on the set of Hope, a TNT movie she is shooting near Houston. The drama, starring Christine Lahti, airs in October.

A dogged Kim Basinger crossed her fingers for luck before unsuccessfully setting out to adopt 36 beagles at a research lab in East Millstone, N.J. Basinger had helped save the dogs from a pharmaceutical company's plan to break their legs for osteoporosis research.
