Singer Whitney Houston, 33, received two stitches to close a two-inch cut on her left cheek on July 21 while vacationing with husband Bobby Brown on a yacht off Capri, Italy. Local police began investigating the incident after receiving conflicting accounts of how the injury occurred. While Houston maintained that she hit a rock while swimming, a member of the ship's crew told authorities that the singer was cut while on board.
Gerda Christian, 83, Adolf Hitler's favorite secretary because of her devotion and Aryan looks, died of cancer in Düsseldorf, Germany. Christian, a Hitler loyalist to her death, once recalled, "I can't complain. Hitler wasn't such a bad boss to his staff."...
Billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith, 64, who in 1994 founded and bankrolled Britain's Referendum Party to fight that country's move toward political and economic integration with Europe, died of a heart attack after a long battle with cancer on July 19 in Marbella, Spain....
Cinematographer Stuart Jewell, 84, who popularized the use of time-lapse photography to reveal the wondrous workings of nature, died on July 13 of colon cancer in Costa Mesa, Calif. Jewell was one of six cameramen who filmed the Disney classic The Living Desert, which won the Academy Award for best documentary in 1953....
Attorney Arthur Liman, 64, who interrogated Lt. Col. Oliver North on national television in 1987 as lead counsel for the Senate committee investigating the Iran-contra affair, died on July 17 of bladder cancer in New York City.
Dudley Moore, 62, and his fourth wife, Nicole Rothschild, 33, have reconciled. Last week, Rothschild dropped a $5 million civil lawsuit against Moore in which she claimed that the actor had "relentlessly assaulted, battered, threatened and terrorized" her during their six-year relationship. The couple have a son, Nicholas, 2.
