O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden, 41, and supermarket checker Miki Gaut, 36, filed separate lawsuits on Aug. 20 in L.A. and Lancaster, Calif., in a custody dispute over Gaut's 3-month-old daughter Tiffany, whom she claims Darden fathered. Darden, who has acknowledged a past relationship with Gaut, is seeking primary custody of the child, provided that a paternity test verifies that he is the father. Gaut declined to discuss the case....
On Aug. 25 a federal judge in L.A. ruled that former Miss USA Shannon Marketic, 27, cannot sue the Sultan of Brunei, 51, for allegedly holding her captive at his palace in Brunei for 32 days in 1996 (PEOPLE, June 23). The judge ruled that the sultan's head-of-state status affords him sovereign immunity from prose cution. He will rule later on whether to accord the same protection to the sultan's brother Prince Jefri, 47, who is also named in the $90 million lawsuit....
Retired nurse Darlene Gillespie, 56, one of the original Mouseketeers on TV's The Mickey Mouse Club from 1955 to 1959, and her fiancé, Jerry Fraschilla, 60, were each sentenced to three years' probation Aug. 19 in Ventura, Calif, for stealing a food processor and clothing from department store on 26. The judge called the two professional thieves.
Actress Jane Seymour, 46, star of CBS's Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, was diagnosed with leptospirosis, an infectious disease that causes jaundice and fever, while shooting a remake of the movie The Swiss Family Robinson in Puerto Rico. She is expected to make a full recovery and was well enough to resume filming in late August....
The San Luis Obispo (Calif.) County coroner's office reported on Aug. 19 that a heart defect was the probable cause of the June 30 death of 93-pound Boston Ballet dancer Heidi Guenther, 22 (PEOPLE, July 28). The office said its investigation could not rule out an eating disorder as a factor in the death.
All My Children star Michael Nader, 52, who also appeared on Dynasty in the '80s, was charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest and endangering the welfare of a minor—his daughter Lindsay, 13, was with him in his car—on Aug. 23 in Suffolk County, N.Y.
Swedish-born model Vendela K. Thommessen, 30, and her husband, businessman Olaf Thommessen, 30, are expecting their first child early next year.
Actor Gary Oldman, 39, and his wife, photographer Donya Fiorentino, 29, welcomed their first child, a 6-lb. 6-oz. boy, Gulliver Flynn, on Aug. 20 in L.A. Both have one child from a previous marriage.
Singer Rosemary I Clooney, 69, is engaged to dancer Dante DiPaolo, 71. The couple, who have lived together since 1973, plan to wed before Christmas. Clooney has five children by her late husband, actor José Ferrer.
Former auto-leasing executive Loras Goedken, 52, the hemophiliac whose family is believed to be the hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic in America (PEOPLE, April 21), died of complications from the disease on Aug. 24 in Des Moines. Goedken, who had lost four brothers, his wife and two other relatives to AIDS since 1987, became a tireless advocate for hemophiliacs with AIDS in his last years.
