The Judges for Best and Worst Dressed '97

The nine hardy souls who sat in judgment for our 18th annual Best and Worst Dressed issue delivered opinions on nearly 300 photos—as well as on what they see in the mirror. Comic Carol Leifer freely admits to being a "jeans and sneakers person" in need of "trained professionals to tell me what to wear," which describes to a T (100 percent cotton, please) fashion designers Kate Spade and John Bartlett and movie costumer Deena Appel, who dressed no less a dandy than Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery. In a totally different garment bag from Leifer is Seattle Mariner Alex Rodriguez, an Armani addict, who believes that most athletes "try too hard" to follow the fads. (His rule? "You can never be overdressed.") Like restaurateur and syndicated fashion reporter Barbara Smith, Sunset Beach actress Laura Harring, Miss USA 1985, sticks mainly to classics. But on her "trendy with a twist" days she shares common ground with MTV veejay Kennedy, who favors "a little bit of everything" along with her trademark specs. Taking the least lofty approach is 6'4" Craig Kilborn, host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show. His fashion philosophy? "Showering and a lot of Nikes."
