Maybe it's an age thing. The subtitle of the 63-year-old singer's latest album, Pat Boone: In a Metal Mood, is No More Mr. Nice Guy. No more Mr. Style Guy, either. When the clean-cut Boone covered R&B tunes like "Ain't That a Shame" in the '50s—helping to make him the No. 8 singles artist of all time—he looked sharp in sweaters and white bucks. Now, though, the grandfather of 15 is flubbing the fashion notes. "At some point he lost perspective about what works for him," says costumer Deena Appel. "Dressing loud doesn't suit him," agrees designer Kate Spade. "I don't know who Pat Boone is anymore." Gen-Xer shortstop Alex Rodriguez never did. "Who is this guy?" he asks. "He's the worst dressed guy I've ever seen."
