Mindy McCready

There can be no greater compliment to a country singer than to say she is reminiscent of Emmylou Harris, and McCready, while her voice is not the ethereal instrument Harris's is, does have the vocal and rhythmic versatility of Harris, and they share the ability to convincingly move from sweet to sexy, from balladeer to rocker. On this her second album, McCready ranges from the bouncy "What if I Do" to the solemn "Oh Romeo" (whose refrain is "I would not die for you."), from the clever "For a Good Time Call" to the provocative title tune, Sunny Russ's philosophical treatise on sexual mores. Turning 22 on Nov. 30 (and engaged to former "Clark Kent" Dean Cain), McCready manages to blend a vigorous, understated neofeminism with a healthy affection for men. No doubt both sexes will find something to their liking here. (BNA)
