Judge Hiller Zobel's reversal of Louise Woodward's jury conviction completely invalidates the life of Matthew Eappen. Add this judge's name to the growing list of judges who feel it's okay to murder and go free.
CHRISTINE ELLIS, Durango, Colo.
Anyone who buys into the theory that "a little rough" puts breathing tubes and a catheter in an 8-month-old baby has to be at minimum a borderline idiot. Judge Zobel did for Louise Woodward what Barry Scheck and his cohorts (with their bag of deceit) couldn't. To say that Judge Zobel made a mockery of the system is putting it mildly. It's time he hung up his robe.
LINDA FRENCH, Seattle
I wonder how many of the cheering patrons at the Riggers pub in England will hire Louise Woodward as an au pair for their children.

What Daniel Myers and Chad Lamansky did at Noah's Ark animal shelter can only be described as evil. Serial killers have a history of mutilating animals as a prelude to killing people. Finding these "boys" guilty of trespassing and breaking-and-entering does not address the maliciousness of their crimes.
NICOLA VINCI, Acton, Mass.
To anyone who doesn't believe these boys should be given the maximum punishment allowed by law, I have two words for you—Jeffrey Dahmer.
CYNTHIA HARRIS, Atlanta
I wish there was a "shaken teenager syndrome" to counter such evil.
JILL ISHKANIAN, Santa Barbara, Calif.
I was appalled by the town of Fairfield's attitude toward this atrocious crime. What moron would equate the slaughtering of farm animals for food with the bludgeoning of cats with baseball bats? They're all nuts!
K. FRANK, Coral Springs, Fla.
I would like to send a donation to Noah's Ark in memory of the cats. What is the address, please?

An overwhelming majority of Iowans were outraged by the actions of the young men who murdered and maimed dozens of cats at a shelter in our state. It is a travesty that the jury found that the cats' lives did not reach the $500 price tag needed to charge the men with a felony. However, I am confident that the laws will be changed so monsters like these can be punished appropriately and animals' lives will not be reduced to mere monetary value.

We were touched by your article about Jim Kelly and his family coping with their son Hunter's Krabbe's disease. We know the heartache of watching your child deteriorate from the effects of this devastating illness. Our son Jeffrey was diagnosed with Krabbe's in 1977 at the age of 8 months. You quoted Dr. David Wenger as saying that only one child known to have the disease lived to age 2. Fortunately our son defied the medical odds and survived to 12 years and 9 months. Our prayers are with the Kellys.
RONALD AND BARBARA WILSON Crockett, Calif.
I would like to have the address of Hunter's Hope so I could send a donation. Even if today's babies do not survive this disease, the babies of the future will.

I want to make sure I understand the implication of your article about "nice guy" Bernie Tiede. It's all right to shoot a woman in the back and hide her body in a freezer if one preaches sometimes on Sunday, takes kids' baseball teams out to dinner and gives cars away to the needy? Sorry, but from where I stand, no one is above the law—not even nice guys like Bernie.
WENDY HARRISON, Roswell, Ga.
For the record, I have never said I stand behind Bernie Tiede, as you stated. That would include endorsement and approval of anything he may do or be accused of doing. I have said that I stand with Bernie as his pastor. In that context, I pray with Bernie and seek to help him deal with the circumstances of his life at this time. First United Methodist Church has not taken a stance for or against the district attorney, Danny Buck Davidson. We support him in his search for truth in the death of Marge Nugent.
