'Tis the seasoning for Spice Girls to become engaged, as a member of the pop group—the second one within a month—announced her intentions. Mel B (the Scary one), 22, plans to wed Icelandic-born former boxer Fjolnir Thorgeirsson, 26. No date is set.

Edye Smith Stowe, 25, who, after losing her two sons in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, underwent reverse tubal ligation and in vitro fertilization, gave birth to a baby boy on Jan. 12. New son Glenn Brennen (7 lbs. 10 ozs.), dad Paul, 24, a TV engineer, and Mom are all doing fine.

Actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, both 27, are expecting a child, their first, in July. They met in 1996 while making Gattica, a film about genetic engineering....

Jazz great Lionel Hampton, 89, who lost a lifetime's memorabilia in an apartment fire a year ago, filed a $10 million lawsuit on Jan. 8 against importer Hunter Fan Co. of Memphis and two retailers. He blames their high-heat halogen floor lamp for igniting the blaze in his Manhattan high-rise.

Country singer Hoyt Axton, 59, whose song "Joy to the World" was a No. 1 hit for Three Dog Night, pleaded guilty to possession of more than a pound of marijuana on Jan. 6 in Hamilton, Mont. Axton was an honorary sheriff's deputy in the county and had lectured students about the dangers of using drugs. He received a three-year deferred sentence and a $15,000 fine.

Actress Mae Questel, 89, who gave voice to Betty Boop and Olive Oyl in cartoons, died on Jan. 4 in New York City of undisclosed causes. She revived Betty's patented squeal in Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 1988 and, a year later, played Woody Allen's mother in New York Stories....

W.E. Diemer, 93, who confected the first commercial bubble gum in 1928, died of congestive heart failure in Lancaster, Pa., on Jan. 8. He never received royalties for his concoction (dubbed Double Bubble by the Fleer Co., his employer) but, un-deflated, delighted in inviting children to his home and overseeing bubble-blowing contests....

Country musician Floyd Cramer, 64, known for smooth "country-politan" piano instrumental like "Last Date," died of lung cancer on Dec. 31 in Madison, Tenn.

Actress Larisa Oleynik, 16, the lead in Nickelodeon's The Secret World of Alex Mack since age 12 and that network's hugely popular star, says she deserves a recess. Although she'll continue to appear on-air in shows already taped, she's taking an indefinite leave to live life as just a "normal teen"—whatever that is.

CBS This Morning co-anchor Jane Robelot, 37, and TV cameraman Mario DeCarvalho, 47, wed on Jan. 10 in the bride's hometown of Greenville, S.C. It is her first marriage, his second....

Hercules hunk Kevin Sorbo, 39, wed Chicago Hope's Sam Jenkins, 33 (and a girl), on Jan. 5 in Pacific Palisades, Calif. It is the first marriage for both.
