Kristin Hersh

Anyone who bemoans today's female singer-songwriters as either too self-serious or youth-obsessed should listen here. On Hersh's second solo effort since her l980s heyday with Throwing Muses, the 31-year-old wife and mother of three balances maturity with just the right measure of mirth. Accompanying her own sweet but whiskey-rough voice on acoustic guitar, Hersh explores such adult topics as soured friendship ("Like You") and encroaching middle age ("Heaven") from a determinedly rock-and-roll perspective. Or, as she phrases it in a bittersweet minor key on "Aching for You," "Honey, you know this is not so bad/ Hanging around, wired for sound." (Rykodisc)
