Gang Starr (Noo Trybe/Virgin)

In the big-hype realm of '90s hip hop, Gang Starr is a throwback. Unlike many of their current peers who construct love poems to designer labels, rapper GURU and deejay Premier still stick to no-nonsense, gritty rhymes and to the hip-hop basics: voice and turntable. The marriage of GURU's reflective, socially conscious lyrics and Premier's rugged, soulladen rhythm tracks makes for honest, hard-edged hip hop. With assists from proven hitmakers K-Ci & JoJo Hailey of Jodeci, this CD may enjoy the chart success that has eluded the Gang.

Bottom Line: A good rap
