Natasha Henstridge, Michael Madsen, Marg Helgenberger, Justin Lazard
In this lame sci-fi horror film, there's no stopping the mating call of the wild. Species II's main characters (Lazard and Henstridge), when in heat, don't let such would-be prophylactics as reinforced glass walls, metal fences or armed militia get in their way. Possibly their lack of self-control has something to do with the fact that they're aliens. Lazard was once human but, after visiting Mars as an astronaut, he has been infected with alien DNA and now is an alien in human disguise. Henstridge, a lab-created clone of the murderous character she played in the first Species, is actually half-alien, half-human. Guess which half wins out.
Species II, even more than the original 1995 film, is loaded up with space-age gadgetry, faux scientific mumbo-jumbo, slithery alien monsters and gore. Lots of gore. Henstridge, who is required to bare her breasts only once here (compared with a half-dozen or so times in the earlier film), strides through the movie like a ferocious Amazon. Lazard excels at looking pained. Neither Madsen nor Helgenberger, both holdovers from the first film, has much to do besides look concerned and discharge special alien-fighting weapons. (R)
Bottom Line: Sub-Species, and that's not saying much
