Picks and Pans Review: Urban Legend

Jared Leto, Alicia Witt

Yeah, it's another of those teen slashers for youngish audiences who'll laugh reflexively at a reference to "Mikey." On a campus in Maine, a maniac is offing students with gruesome scenarios borrowed from so-called urban legends, those freakish, unprovable stories that take root in the public imagination. So if legend has it that Mikey, the kid in the old Life cereal commercials, died eating Pop Rocks...

This movie, from the team that produced I Know What You Did Last Summer, has a few jolts, not much more. As the girl destined to confront the killer, Witt (Cybill) is glum and earnest. What is she, a divinity student? Leto, as a campus journalist, looks like the cartoon character Speed Racer. (R)

Bottom Line: Hey, Mikey, I didn't like it!
