Picks and Pans Review: Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!

by Fannie Flagg

Beautiful Dena Nordstrom, the hero of this novel by Fannie Flagg {Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe), is at the height of her career as a high-powered network TV journalist. Still, she runs like the dickens from anything resembling love—including the kind her goofy, hick relatives offer at every turn. After a stress-related ulcer forces her into therapy, Dena finally admits she has never recovered from her mother's disappearance years earlier. Unraveling that mystery takes us through some outlandish adventures, but Flagg's folksy ending and her faith in the healing power of small towns and family are refreshing. (Random House, $25.95)

Bottom Line: Light yarn with a satisfying message
