Ralonzo Phelectron Cochran, 43, a jack-of-all-trades and brother of former O.J. Simpson defense attorney Johnnie Cochran, died of multiple gunshot wounds on a Los Angeles sidewalk on Nov. 1. The LAPD said that they know of no motive nor do they have any suspects.
Ailing
Former Yankee and Hall of Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter, 52, who in the '70s became baseball's first big-money free agent, revealed on Nov. 9 that he has Lou Gehrig's disease, the same degenerative nerve disorder that felled its namesake (also a Yankee legend) in 1941. Hunter, now retired and living in Hertford, N.C., is taking medication to slow the progress of the rare, fatal disease.

Euthanasia practitioner Dr. Jack Kevorkian, 70, suffered his first trial loss on Nov. 4 when a jury in Royal Oak, Mich., found him guilty of interfering with police and resisting arrest. The charges stemmed from an incident on May 7, when Kevorkian, who has been acquitted in three other trials for assisting suicides, attempted to drop off a body at a hospital and tussled with cops when they inquired what the doctor was up to. The judge fined him $700, plus $200 in court costs....
On Nov. 9 in L.A., actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, 38, triumphed in a lawsuit brought by martial arts expert Frank Dux, who had sued the action hero for $1.5 million. Dux wanted the money for a screenplay which he alleged Van Damme reworked to make 1996's The Quest.

An autopsy report released on Nov. 4 in L.A. concluded that Newhart actress Mary Frann died in her sleep of a heart attack on Sept. 23 at 55.
