Show of the week

Looking for animation an adult can laugh at, besides The Simpsons and King of the Hill? Bounce out of bed at 8:30 a.m. ET and sample Disney's One Saturday Morning on ABC. Within that two-hour kids' block—which comprises the cartoon series Doug, Recess and Pepper Ann plus various shorter segments—you should find what you're after.

In this space we'll confine ourselves to Doug and Recess, whose Dec. 19 episode is a holiday hoot. Principal Prickley (voiced by Dabney Coleman) hopes to see the school's scrupulously multicultural Christmas pageant included in a major TV special—if his star, fourth-grader Mikey (who sings just like Robert Goulet), can motivate himself to perform despite the devastating discovery that Santa Claus may be a fat fiction. This Christmas episode of Recess is on a par with the delightfully satiric Thanksgiving episode of Doug, in which a tycoon tried to soften his rapacious image by having the traditional feast in the humble home of 12-year-old Doug Funnie and his average family. We dig it: irreverence for viewers of all ages.

Bottom Line: Top-notch toons
