Man, proverbially, cannot live by bread alone. Some women apparently cannot live without it, as an accessory: The newest Hollywood staple is the Fendi baguette bag. "It's just the perfect size," raves 3rd Rock from the Sun star Kristen if Johnston—it fits snugly under the arm, like the French loaf after which it is named.
Why the rage? The soft rectangular shape "is really classic," says costume designer Patricia Field, who makes sure Sarah Jessica Parker's character on Sex and the City seldom leaves home without one. (Neither does Parker.) But the fun's in picking the material—and there are plenty of choices, from nylon ($450) to crocodile ($6,000). "With so many different variations," says Silvia Fendi, the creative director for Fendi, "it becomes unique."
For some, it's hard to own just one. "You drool when you see these bags," declares stylist Fati Parsia, who admits she got client Catherine Zeta-Jones hooked on the purses. "Every time we speak, she's like, 'Where's my new Fendi baguette?'
