Roseanne may have been set in the chilly Illinois tundra, but Sara Gilbert, who played acid-tongued daughter Darlene for nine seasons, never had to leave her native Southern California. No such luck on the set of the movie Light It Up, the inner-city drama in which Gilbert plays a rebellious teen. "It was miserable how cold it was," says Gilbert of the film's Chicago shoot. "We were up at 6, with 30-below windchills."

Her career, however, is heating up. Gilbert, 24, who wrapped Roseanne in 1997, next appears in the January comedy The Big Tease and is "seriously thinking" about doing another sitcom. "People are critical of television, but it can be a great place to do comedy," says Gilbert.

Back in 1993, though, Gilbert felt confined by the "insular world" of TV and graduated Yale as an art major while still playing Darlene. "It's important to get a feeling for what's really important," says Gilbert, who didn't even have a TV at Yale. Back in L.A. and hanging out with her former Roseanne hubby Johnny Galecki, she's style-centric again: "I change furniture every four weeks," she says. "I've had like 14 couches."
