Catherine Keener was so convincingly cutting as a scheming vamp in Malkovich that she might as well have had razor blades for elbows. It was only the latest in a series of sparkling, carefully calibrated comic performances this accomplished actress has been giving for a decade, usually in little-seen independent films such as Walking and Talking and Living in Oblivion. Fellow nominees Jolie and Sevigny were also top-notch, but I'm pulling for Keener.
