Tunesmith Burt Bacharach, 71, had surgery on his left shoulder on April 12 in L.A. after he missed a stair-step before a performance in Indianapolis earlier in the month.

A new daughter has 80-year-old actor James Doohan, who played Star Trek's Scotty, absolutely beaming. His wife, Wende, 43, gave birth to Sarah (7 lbs. 13 oz.) on April 11 in Kirkland, Wash. The couple have two grown sons—Eric, 23, and Thomas, 21.

Legal Matters

In Des Moines, Wash., 16-year-old Vili Fualaau, who at 12 had started a relationship with his sixth-grade teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, 38, filed a notice of intent to sue his elementary school and hometown for at least $1 million for allowing her to seduce him. The liaison produced two children: Audrey, who turns 3 in May, and Alexis, 18 months. And in another outcome related to the couple's illicit romance, an appeals court in Seattle ruled on April 17 that Letourneau, who is serving a 7½-year prison sentence for child rape, may earn royalties from books, movies and interviews related to her story....

Muhammad Ali, 58, filed a lawsuit on April 18 in Louisville, Ky., to reclaim a boxing robe that Walter E. Cuff, 49, says the boxer's late mother gave him when he worked for her as a handyman. The robe, dating from the early '60s, bears the name Cassius Clay, Ali's name before he converted to Islam in 1964.

Actor David Keith, 45, who has a part in the hit submarine saga U-571, and Nancy Clark, 28, a publicist, married on April 15 in Knoxville, Tenn., both for the first time.

Uncoupled
Citing irreconcilable differences, Family Ties matriarch Meredith Baxter, 52, filed to end her 4½-year marriage to screenwriter Michael Blodgett, 60, on April 14 in L.A. The couple had no children, although the thrice-married Baxter has five from two previous marriages.

Deaths

Russian-born actress Lila Kedrova, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a dying prostitute in 1964's Zorba the Greek and picked up a Tony in 1984 for the same role in the Broadway musical version of the film, died of undisclosed causes on Feb. 16 in Sault Sainte Marie, Ont. She was believed to be 82. Although her death was reported the following day by a local paper, other news agencies did not pick up the announcement until recently....

Alice Sheets Marriott, who, with her late husband J. Willard, opened a nine-stool root beer stand in 1927 and built it into a vast hotel and hospitality chain, died on April 17 in Washington, D.C. She was 92.

Expecting
Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin, 34, and husband Kevin Grandalski, 35, who works in law enforcement, are expecting their second child in late August. The couple live in L.A. with their daughter Sarah Rose, 4.
