Maria do Carmo Jeronimo, a former slave believed to have been born on March 5, 1871, died of a stroke on June 14 in Itajuba, Brazil, at age 129. Because she did not have a birth certificate, Jeronimo was unofficially listed as the world's oldest woman.
Soap actress Lauralee Bell, 31, who plays Christine Williams on The Young and the Restless, and her husband, photographer Scott Martin, also 31, are expecting their first child in January. The couple married in 1997.
On June 21 in L.A., doctors operated on actress Fran Drescher, 42, to remove a cancerous growth from her uterus. According to her publicist, the former Nanny star's cancer was "caught at Stage I, and the surgery was 100 percent successful. In L.A. on June 6, a food-services company owned by celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck, 50, filed a lawsuit against Edward James Olmos, 53, seeking $34,420 plus other damages and legal fees, for costs incurred catering the 1999 Denver Latino International Film Festival. Puck's outfit says the actor never paid up. Olmos's rep says the Stand and Deliver star is working to resolve the food fight.
