Picks and Pans Review: Pokémon: the Movie 2000

Following the success of 1998's Pokémon cartoon movie, a sequel arrives for children whose attention spans haven't since been swallowed whole by Harry Potter. Three mythical birds representing ice, fire and lightning escape from island aviaries. They bicker and ruin the weather. Ash, one of the human trainers of Pokémon's menagerie of magical animals, must save the planet. His quest to capture the birds is arduous, slow and repetitive. The one good thing here is the introductory short: Pikachu, the cute rodenty creature, takes an Alice in Wonderland trip with his blinky, twittery friends. I felt as if I were 4 years old again and surrounded by my stuffed toys. (G)
