Search-and-rescue worker Sarah Patrick and her partner Monty, a-golden retriever with a superstar snout, communicate better than most spouses. So why does Monty take a shine to John Logan, whom Sarah despises? A strong, good-looking billionaire does pose an obvious threat to the equilibrium of a resourceful, attractive woman like Sarah, who needs only her faithful four-legged friend. Alas, Johansen {The Killing Game), who has helped expand the romantic-thriller genre, here explains everything from mud slides to canine training in language so leaden that reading The Search is like picking through earthquake rubble: hard work with mostly disappointing results. (Bantam, $24.95)

Bottom Line: A bowwow
