Inventor Edward Craven Walker, whose bright idea back in 1963 was to bottle a mixture of substances resembling oil and water, place it atop a hot light bulb and market the result as the lava lamp, died on Aug. 15 of cancer near Hampshire, England. He was 82. The lava lamp rode the wave of '60s psychedelia, but Walker once remarked, "If you buy my lamp, you won't need drugs."...

Character actor John Milford, who appeared in hundreds of TV and movie productions and also used his training as a civil engineer to help create the design for the bronze stars that grace Hollywood's Walk of Fame, died of complications from melanoma on Aug. 14 in L.A. He was 72....

Patient impatiens grower Claude Hope, 93, who, through years of hybridizing, saw a previously unruly posy from Latin America take root as the No. 1 bedding plant in the U.S., died on July 14 at his Costa Rican farm in Dulce Nombre de Jesús.

On Aug. 17 at a Washington, D.C., hospital, doctors operated on Reform Party presidential candidate Pat Buchanan to remove his gall bladder. The 61-year-old politician returned to his home in the area two days later.

In the Doghouse
A state trooper in rural North Carolina pulled Albert Gore III off the road on Aug. 12 and charged him with speeding (97 in a 55 mph zone) and reckless driving. Gore, the 17-year-old son of the Veep and presidential candidate, has a court hearing on Sept. 13 and faces punishments that could include a stiff fine and a suspended license.

In Houston, 1984 Olympic gold medal gymnast and author Mary Lou Retton, 32, and her husband, Shannon Kelley, 34, a financial analyst, welcomed their third daughter, Skyla Brae Kelley (6 lbs. 1 oz.), on Aug. 9. Daughters Shayla Rae and McKenna Lane are 5 and 3, respectively.

Law and Order
As soon as his Continental Airlines flight pulled into the gate in Cleve-land for a layover on Aug. 17, actor Terrence Howard, 31, who co-starred in this summer's Big Momma's House, was jailed for allegedly assaulting a stewardess. Meredith Hughes, 23, says Howard grabbed her left wrist and berated her when she barred him from taking his 3-year-old daughter to the lavatory shortly after takeoff. Howard was eventually released from jail, and no charges have yet been filed.

On Aug. 5, former 1980s TV teen heartthrob Jason Bateman (The Hogan Family), 31, popped the question to his girlfriend, actress Amanda Anka, 31, the daughter of singer Paul Anka. (She answered affirmatively.) The couple, who live in L.A., have not yet picked a wedding date.

Despite falling off a motorcycle and reportedly breaking three ribs on Aug. 19, singer-actress Ann-Margret, 59, showed up—with her arm in a sling—to serve as grand marshal at a National Hot Rod Association event in Brainerd, Minn., the next day.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, 57, and his paramour of the past seven years, former congressional aide Calista Bisek, 34, exchanged wedding vows before 150 guests at a hotel in Alexandria, Va., on Aug. 18. It was his third marriage and her first.
