Picks and Pans Review: Dennis Franz, Nypd Blue (abc)

UPDATED 09/11/2000 at 01:00 AM EDT Originally published 09/11/2000 at 01:00 AM EDT

James Gandolfini, The Sopranos (HBO)
Jerry Orbach, Law & Order (NBC)
Martin Sheen, The West Wing (NBC) *
Sam Waterston, Law& Order (NBC)

President of the United States is the best job Sheen has ever had. The veteran actor beautifully conveys the humanity of a leader trying to be compassionate, tough, principled, pragmatic and-perhaps most important-reelectable. Gandolfini is still superb as a New Jersey Mafioso with heavy responsibilities of his own, but Sheen is entitled to the award as a matter of executive privilege.
