THE EXQUISITE TASTE displayed by actor Pierce Brosnan left our panel of style mavens shaken and stirred. Although the 48-year-old Irish-born actor cuts loose from the neckties that bind Agent 007, he is every bit as debonair as the celebrated spy he has played in three films since 1995–most recently last year's The World Is Not Enough. "Elegant dresser," enthuses designer Elie Tahari. Adds game show host Ben Stein: "He's the perfect, great-looking movie star." But to the current keeper of the James Bond flame, looking dapper at all times is simply part of the job. When an actor plays 007, the 6'2" Brosnan told The Vancouver Sun last year, "he owns you and you're responsible to him." And with that responsibility comes a license to dress to kill.
Brosnan's color scheme was appropriately oceanic at a whale-conservation event in Santa Monica last September. "It's a nice, flowy summertime look," says model Mia Tyler of the actor's Tumbull & Asser shirt and Ralph Lauren pants. Designer Dana Buchman sings further praises: "The blue is beautiful. The hairstyle fits the rumpled, at-ease look. What's not to like?"
Brosnan and fiancée Keely Shaye Smith were visions in velvet at the November premiere of The World Is Not Enough. The suit "looks good without a tie–on him," says Elie Tahari. To Ben Stein, it's all about attitude: "He doesn't look like he's showing off in this. He knows who he is."
The Brioni suit Brosnan wore to a June concert in Beverly Hills earns high marks from Dana Buchman, who declares it "elegant, a little festive but not costumey." While Ben Stein adds that "it's a perfect Hollywood look," the ensemble moves singer Sisqó to literary allusion: "Hike the Don Juan feel."
